Auckland Maori  Tamaki Makaurau

Started in the late 40’s under the guidance of Jack and Sally Ewe, all played at the Coronation Tournaments. Both Rugby League and Netball teams represented with many players and officials and families all beginning to carve out their history and Mana with a strong influence going through from generation to generation.

Most players were from Manukau Rugby League teams, as well as those playing for Southern Rugby League Clubs. These clubs belonged to Auckland Rugby League. Even to this day there are family members whose names go back to the beginning. (Pai, Ewe, Clark, Whaanga, Friend, Kirkwood, Bell, Brodrick, Rawiri, Rewha, Waipouri, Tawha, Peanut Jenkins, Mooloo, Alexandr, Roberts, Phillips, Bunna Yates, Keyes.)

After the reign of Jack Ewe the club went into a decline because the ARL competition clashed with the dates of the Coronation and any Huis that were taking place at the time.

In 1983 after a meeting at Greg Whaiapu’s place it was decided by an enthusiastic group to set up a committee to once again resume and revitalise Maori football in the Tamaki Makaurau area.

They have been incorporated and registered and are affiliated to Auckland Rugby League for some years.

We have gone back to the later years, providing a springboard to our young people to participate in their own tournaments and have many enthusiastic supporters and officials wanting to grow the game again at grassroots level.
