The Auckland Rugby League has a mandatory Head Injury Policy. Should a player be concussed during a game the player must stand down from all play for a minimum of 3 weeks. If a player is concussed twice in a season the player should stand down from all games for the remainder of the season.
A player stood down for concussion should not participate in team training during this period and then only when cleared by a doctor.
Any player found to have taken the field for his team in the stand down period will be deemed out of order and any competition points won by their team could be forfeited. The team will also be subject to any monetary fine applicable to out of order players.
Where there is doubt whether a player is concussed, there are a number of basic tests that can be undertaken on the field. Question the player and ask them to undertake small balancing acts. If the player fails to perform or answer any of the assigned tasks or questions then this indicates possible concussion and the player should be immediately removed from the field and placed under observation. The player should also be seen by a doctor.
All instances of concussion should be reported to the Auckland Rugby League. The report can be completed on a bottom portion of the team card supplied.
