FROM GRASSROOTS TO GREATNESS: HOWICK HORNETS CLUB DAY 2024

The Howick Hornets Club Day 2024 was a resounding success, capturing the spirit of community and the passion for rugby league that drives clubs across Tāmaki Makaurau.

Held at Paparoa Park, the event brought together players, families, and fans for a day filled with excitement and unforgettable moments. The day was marked by 11 thrilling games, showcasing talent from the Under 6s to the Fox Premiers. The atmosphere was electric as teams battled it out on the field, cheered on by enthusiastic supporters. The highlight for many was the appearance of two players from the One NZ Warriors, who generously spent time signing autographs, taking photos, and inspiring the young players. To show our gratitude to travelling teams, we invited the players from each grade into the club rooms for hotdogs and to reinforce the bonds between our clubs and players. Activities, giveaways, food stalls for all in attendance added to the festive atmosphere, making it a fun-filled day for all ages.

One of the drivers behind the success of the Howick Hornets is Dale Smith, the Junior Coaching Coordinator. Dale’s role involves developing coaches in the junior space, providing them with the support and strategies needed to nurture young talent. His dedication to the club and its members is evident in the increased numbers across the Junior Club and the supportive environment for both volunteer coaches, managers and players. “We encourage people to join the Hornets, both players and coaches.

“We offer  support and strategies for coaches and why we coach, ensuring everyone is aligned in our goals.”

Dale’s journey with the Hornets began five years ago when he joined as a parent, eager to support his son’s participation in rugby league. Over the years, his involvement deepened, and he now plays a vital role in the club’s strategic planning and daily operations. His contribution to the club and its members has helped build a strong, supportive community where everyone feels welcome and valued. The Hornets have seen significant growth recently, with memberships doubling in the last two years. Dale attributes this success to a collective effort from the club’s hardworking committee and the inspiring performance of the Warriors, which has reignited interest in rugby league. “Rugby league has definitely grown over the last couple of years and the  Warriors success last season has been a major factor.

"We are focused on maintaining our integrity and quality as we grow,” Dale says.

“We’re all coaching the same principles and striving for each team to do well.” Dale is quick to acknowledge the tireless efforts of his fellow committee members, who each wear multiple hats to keep the club running smoothly. “Our Club Captain, Pete, is also a sponsor and cooks all the meals for our senior teams. Josh, our media person, does an amazing job at being articulate and passionate on the stories he shares and also represents women’s rugby league. Vicki, who manages our registrations, works multiple hours a week at the bar as a volunteer and manages multiple teams. Renae, our Club Secretary, also manages the under nines and handles a significant workload. Glenn, coaches the under nines, plays Masters and is a passionate supporter. Maria our club treasurer who received a life members acknowledgement and continues to support our club despite living away. Bruce, our Chairman, does all the important administrative work and liaises with ARL and Counties. It’s a collective effort, and everyone plays a crucial role.”

"It takes a village, and the success of Club Day is testament to the community that surrounds Howick Hornets and the collaborative partnerships that have been established over the many years."

Local businesses and supporters rallied around the Hornets, providing sponsorship and fundraising support.  We want to extend a massive thank you to our local businesses that support us year on year. One notable mention goes to Daddy Que, a local businessman who kept the crowds fuelled with his delicious smash burgers, with all sale proceeds going towards the club’s travel expenses for the Rugby League Kiwi Festival in Queenstown. “The community’s support has been incredible,” Dale reflects.

“It’s not just about rugby league; it’s about building a club community where everyone feels they belong.”

As the Hornets continue to grow and thrive, their goals remain focused on creating an attractive, supportive environment for players and coaches. Dale’s vision for the club is to be a place where people want to come, whether they’re new to the game or aspiring to win championships. “We want to be the club people choose because they love the environment, the coaching is top-notch, and they want to be part of a winning culture,” Dale emphasises. “Retention is a big focus, and events like Club Day play a massive role in promoting rugby league and fostering a strong community spirit.”
