LITTLE LEAGUE FEEDS: FUELLING PAPAKURA'S RUGBY LEAGUE FUTURE

Papakura Rugby League’s Little League Feeds initiative has quickly become a cornerstone of the club’s community outreach and player development efforts.

Spearheaded by board member Wade Atiga, this innovative program is transforming the way the club supports its players, both on and off the field. In the heart of South Auckland, where many families face daily challenges, Papakura Rugby League has always been more than just a sports club; it’s a lifeline for the community. Over the past year, the club has secured significant grants, a testament to its commitment to growth and community support. One of the standout projects funded by these grants is the Little League Feeds initiative, a program designed to provide nutritious meals to young players before their Saturday games. The initiative began when Papakura Rugby League received a substantial grant from Foundation North to upgrade their kitchen facilities. This investment modernised the club’s kitchen, setting the stage for the Little League Feeds program. But this was just the beginning.

"We wanted to ensure that our upgraded kitchen wasn’t just a facility but a resource for the community,"

says Wade Atiga, who has been instrumental in driving this initiative. “Our area faces significant deprivation, and many of our young players don’t always have access to a proper meal. We saw an opportunity to make a real difference.” The concept was simple but powerful: provide energy-boosting meals on Friday nights, preparing the kids for their Saturday games. The initiative drew inspiration from Wade’s own experiences as a player, where team meals were a key part of building camaraderie and ensuring players were physically prepared for the game.

However, getting the initiative off the ground was no small feat. Wade and his family personally contributed funds each week to cover the initial costs, while the local New World Papakura came on board as the main sponsor, providing weekly support throughout the season. As word spread about the program’s positive impact, more sponsors joined, allowing the initiative to grow. The success of the Little League Feeds program would not have been possible without the dedication of key individuals like Adrienne Waratini, who every Friday spent hours shopping for and cooking the meals. Adrienne’s tireless efforts ensured that the kids received meals that were thoughtfully prepared and met with the same dedication she brought to every Friday night.

"The response from the community was overwhelming, Wade recalls."

“We posted about it on social media, and it got the most comments we’ve ever had. People loved the idea, and it quickly became a key part of our club’s culture.” Every Friday during the season, teams gather at the club for a nutritious meal. The menu, carefully crafted to boost energy levels, includes favourites like lasagna and macaroni—meals that provide the carbs and nutrients young athletes need. But the benefits go beyond just the food. “It’s not just about the meal,” Wade explains. “Before each dinner, one of our life members comes in to talk to the kids about the club’s history and what it means to play for Papakura. It’s become a bonding experience that reinforces the sense of belonging and pride in our club.”

The program’s success is evident not just in the smiles on the kids’ faces but also in their performance on the field. The team bonding and proper nutrition have translated into improved results, with several teams making it to the finals this season. Looking ahead, Wade and the Papakura Rugby League club plan to continue and expand the Little League Feeds initiative. “Next year, we’re going to be even more organised. We want to give teams more notice and increase participation. Our goal is to make sure that every player, regardless of their background, feels supported and valued,” Wade says. The club’s efforts don’t stop at the Little League Feeds. With the help of a development officer, the club has strengthened its ties with local schools, bringing rugby league to more young people in the community. The growth in the club’s girls’ teams—from one to three in just a year—highlights the broader impact of these initiatives.

"We’re building something special here, Wade concludes. With the right support, our players can achieve anything. This is just the beginning."

Papakura Rugby League’s Little League Feeds is a shining example of how clubs can go beyond the game to make a real difference in their communities. By combining strategic investments, passionate leadership, and community support, Papakura is not just preparing its players for their next game—it’s preparing them for life.
