The ARL x One NZ Warriors Partnership aims to deliver better outcomes and greater opportunities for all rugby league across Tāmaki Makaurau and transform our competitions and pathways.
The partnership has prompted a fresh look at our existing pathway’s structure, with a clear focus on keeping talent in Auckland, strengthening alignment between our systems, and creating genuine and sustainable opportunities for players, coaching staff, match officials, volunteers and the rugby league community.
Viggo Rasmussen, GM of Football Development, describes it as “an exciting moment in time for the sport here in Auckland, a true opportunity to leverage each other’s unique characteristics to grow the game for the better.”
"It was great to connect with the Auckland Rugby League clubs last Monday to discuss our partnership. We’re committed to supporting the growth of rugby league in Auckland and look forward to seeing this collaboration strengthen the game from grassroots through to elite pathways" says Cameron George, CEO, One NZ Warriors.
What’s Changing?
Revamped Rep Structure for U15s & U17s (Boys & Girls):
More than 100 additional players will now be captured in structured development environments through an expanded rep programme. This gives more young athletes a taste of high-performance league and provides a stronger foundation for their long-term growth.
New Four-Team Region of Origin Model (U13 & U14 Boys):
The traditional two-team format is being replaced by a more expansive model featuring four teams: Central North, East, South, and West. The new format promotes healthier long-term development strategies, rather than the traditional talent selection and talent ID models. The aim is to reach and connect with more players. While the girls' programme will remain two teams for now, expanding this space remains a key priority.
Dedicated U15 Rep Focus Tied to Shaun Johnson Shield Window:
As part of the changes, U15s will step out of the Region of Origin format and into a standalone rep window, likely aligned with the Shaun Johnson Shield. This move is about creating a more focused development environment for this key age group, one that better supports their progression through the pathway. Details are still be finalised around this age group and we will update you when we know more.
More Roles for Coaches and Support Staff:
The new pathways opens up more entry points for coaches, trainers, managers and match officials, especially those coming through the club system and looking to take the next step into representative pathways. Supporting and growing our people, on and off the field remains a central goal of this partnership.
Continued Growth in the Female Space:
The female game remains a key area of focus. While the current Region of Origin format will stay as a two-team structure for U13-U15 girls, we’re working actively to grow participation so we can expand this model in future seasons.
Letitia Taylor, Head of Women’s and College, says the partnership offers an important boost to the women’s game: “It’s an amazing opportunity to bring together our expertise with the power of the Warriors brand to start to create strong, sustainable pathways for our female players right here in Auckland. I care so much about the women’s game and the people in it, so being able to drive something that shows real opportunity and growth within our own backyard is incredibly special to me.”
We’re also looking at how to improve the experience for female players across all levels, ensuring that more young women have meaningful opportunities to develop their game and feel supported as they move through the pathway.
“This partnership represents a turning point for rugby league in Auckland” says TJ, Head of Pathways at ARL. “For the first time, we’re aligning our grassroots and representative pathways with the Warriors in a way that can genuinely grow, retain and elevate our players, coaching staff, volunteers and Clubs. It’s about more than just finding the best talent, it’s about creating a clear, connected pathway that starts at our local clubs and can lead all the way to the top for both male and female.”
At its core, this partnership is about empowering the people who make the game happen week in and week out. From club volunteers, coaches, trainers to aspiring managers, we’re committed to providing stronger and connected pathways, greater recognition, and holistic support as people move through the system.
We’re excited for what’s ahead, and grateful to be building it together.
