Last night, ARL wrapped up the 2022 season with our Annual Awards celebrating the Men’s and Women’s Premier grades.
This year saw the unique opportunity for nineteen teams top participate in the SAS Fox Memorial Premiership, with the Pt Chevalier Pirates claiming the shield. The Farrelly Photos Women’s competitions had two Manurewa sides take the field and in doing so making history taking out the Premiership and Championship titles.
The Awards acknowledged the individual successes throughout the season of players, team staff and referees, as well as acknowledging overall team success. Abigail Roache was the Cathy Friend Women’s Player of the Year recipient, while Eiden Ackland took out the George Rainey Medal for SAS Fox Memorial Premiership Player of the Year.
“This year has been full of blessings”, Abigail Roache said following the announcement that she had received the Cathy Friend Women’s Player of the Year. Roache touched on her history with injuries and what it meant to make it through this season, "it's just so exciting".
Ackland was blown away by the history of the award, taking in the names on the trophy and the fact that his name was joining the list. “It’s pretty crazy, just seeing the history of this award.”
“It’s been an interesting season, coming back from playing in Australia to start off the year. I jumped back into it at Mt Albert and had a good group of boys there that had come up into the top side. We performed well throughout the year and to cap it off with this award and join some of these names, it’s crazy.”
Player and team of the year were determined by team coaches and managers who voted using a 3, 2, 1 points system following each game throughout the season, along with 3 points to an opposing player.
