Last week, Auckland Rugby League (ARL) hosted its Annual ARL Awards Dinner, during which it unveiled the Steele-Shanks Cup, a prestigious honour for the Women’s Premiership.  The Steele-Shanks Cup is a tribute to Cherie’s extraordinary achievements and a representation of ARL’s commitment to nurturing the growth of women’s rugby league.

The naming of ARL’s Women’s Premiership competition is dedicated to Cherie Steele-Shanks, whose pioneering efforts began nearly five decades ago when, in 1976, she became a pivotal member of the Glenfield Rugby League Club committee.  Her leadership roles, including chair, secretary and treasurer, have left an unforgettable mark.

Cherie Steele-Shanks incredible journey saw her playing a central role in creating the New Zealand Women’s Rugby League committee in 1996, which kicked off the very first National Women’s Tournament. The crowning glory came in 2000 and 2005, with back-to-back victories at the Women’s World Cup, a testament to her drive and vision.

Her dedication led to prestigious awards, such as the New Zealand Rugby League Distinguished Service Award in 2006 and the esteemed title of Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2007 for her invaluable contributions to women’s rugby league. A life member of Auckland Rugby League, Steele-Shanks is a beacon of inspiration, lighting the path for future grassroot rugby league players in Aotearoa.

2023 has seen the elevation of the ARL Women’s Premiership with captivating matches streamed weekly on SKYSPORT and ARL’s YouTube channel under the banner of ARL Wednesday Night League. With over 14 games broadcasted so far, the Women’s Premiership has garnered unprecedented attention, fostering the rapid growth of women’s rugby league.

The Steele-Shanks Cup will be Awarded to the winner of tomorrow's Women's Premiership Grand Final between the Howick Hornets and Mt Albert Lionesses.
